Disney buys Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion

http://money.cnn.com/2009/08/31/news/companies/disney_marvel/index.htm

Summary

This article is about how Disney bought Marvel Entertainment, owners of your very own Spider-man and Wolverine, for $4 Billion. This news came as a shock to many faithful followers of Marvel Comics as people flooded the internet to find out more about what happened this massive comic industry.
In a conference call with investors, Disney Chief Executive Robert Iger said the deal will allow Disney to sell Marvel's vast array of characters and properties across different media platforms and in many markets. This deal would give Disney an opportunity to market more content that would appeal more to boys and girls alike, a market that keeps on getting stronger and stronger

Connections

Disney made a major decision in buying Marvel. During a tough economic time, they made a right choice by cementing themselves as the strongest in the entertainment business.
Disney might as well took into account the channels of distribution as well as promotion, of the marketing mix. Marvel has a huge fan base, that now would be fan's of Disney. All comics including X-Men, Spiderman, Wolverine etc., will now be sold as a product of Disney, not Marvel. $4 billion is just peanuts for Disney, in the long run, they will earn billions with the help of Marvel. Now not only will they gain more publicity with newer fans but will retain old faithfuls because of their love of the comics and their characters.
Marvel has over 5,000 characters in their library. Combining them with Disney, is what they are planning. From comics, to video games to toys for young boys.

Perhaps Mickey Mouse as a villain in one of Wolverine's comics?

Reflection

In the end, I give Disney a big thumbs up for what they did. I think it was a glorious decision in taking over Marvel. This will seriously boost their revenues and assets. But from Marvel's point of view. I believe they should have gone down with a fight. After all, they have a huge industry with an even bigger fan base.
As a Marvel fan myself, I do fear that Disney in some way might try to merge characters from both the universe, this will truly tarnish all the hard work that Marvel put into making their characters into what they are now.

  1. Yeah, I think that it was a smart move for Disney to buy marvel. The action that Marvel brings is just another expansion to Disney, and goes along quite well with Disneys theme. I would certainly love seeing spider man and the hulk mascots in Disney Land. It goes along perfectly with Disneys other collections of characters for kids.

  2. Good thing they chose to do so, I guess... Being stuck with Mickey Mouse and all those guys would get boring after a while if nothing changed, and Marvel never made movies based on their awesome comics. It also allows Disney to appeal to an older, more mature audience, instead of being based only for children. It obviously brings more attention to Disney, and they make a LOT more money, and the Disneyland Theme Park has got to be roaring with kids and teens and adults, because of them buying out comics made for a more mature audience. It helped Disney and their peers, and of course their annual... but I guess that's all that really matters, and it worked!

  3. I think that Disney made a good choice by purchasing Marvel but to those die-hard Marvel fans it seems as though they have been ripped off. With Marvel going to Disney the comics might lose their original edge and end up crossing over with Mickey Mouse. Who knows how that’s going to end up? However there are tons of little kids who are fans of Marvel heroes so maybe by Disney purchasing Marvel, the kids are tone to seeing less violence? In the end no one really knows how this whole fiasco is going turn out but let’s just hope it leaves both sides happy.

  4. Fayyaz, you did a great job with the blog, props to you. I agree, I would love to see Batman, and Spiderman at Disneyland, and so would millions of kids. This brings a new era of movies made and new risks Disney has to take, such as less violence in movies. Which may upset, a lot of die hard Marvel fans. Lastly, I would like to say that Disney did a great job by purchasing the Marvel franchise, and I hope that Disney thrives in the future.

  5. I think disney made the right decision by buying Marvel. Now that disney owns one of the main rivals in comics they will be earing more money and gaining new fans. I think it would of been better for fans if they stayed seperate compainies because they would of seen two new characters made instead of just seeing one. As a fan of Marvel I would rather see them stay as a seperate company instead of letting Disney buy them.
